It's been a long time since I've done a straight install, so I don't know
how usefull I can be.

Here's some info that might help:
http://www.ssc.com/mirrors/LDP/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO/nic.html
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO-2.html#ss2.7
http://www.scyld.com/network/vortex.html

My guess is an irq setting isn't being found correctly. What resources was
the card successfully using before?

Bob
