I have included

        LESSOPEN="| /usr/bin/lesspipe %s"

in my /etc/enviroment

This enables less to view the contents of a number of file
formats including .bz2 .deb and others.

This is enabled by default in SuSE, and I don't know if there is a
reason why it is not in Debian.
