I have included
LESSOPEN="| /usr/bin/lesspipe %s"
in my /etc/enviroment
This enables less to view the contents of a number of file
formats including .bz2 .deb and others.
This is enabled by default in SuSE, and I don't know if there is a
reason why it is not in Debian.
