Key here is that precompiled 2.4 kernel is more modular than precompiled
2.2 kernel and uses initrd.

I have /etc/modules with:
# ISA PnP driver
isa-pnp
this was needed for my PCMCIA system to function. kmod did not take care.
Maybe you have similar situation.

I suggest you to install "ipmasq" package for gateway machine. This is
compatible with 2.2 and 2.4.
