chat script wont dial modem

Manually dialing from minicom however works fine; I can even cut and
paste the strings from my chat script into minicom and they work, but
when the chat script is evoked from pppd, the modem never dials. Syslog
shows that the chat script is being executed -- it records an 'OK' in
response to 'ATZ' (and modem lights confirm) and that 'ATDT<number>' is
being sent to the modem; it just refuses to dial. Modems on both ends
are 3com v.everything. I have a nearly identical ppp setup on another
machine (different modem) and it works fine -- I'm using it to send this
email. Can anyone think of what I might be missing?
