This means that the setlocale() call failed. (I added this because it
made it *much* easier to track down certain kinds of problems.)

Try setting LANG=en_US.ISO-8859-1, perhaps? Or LANG=en_US.UTF-8 if
you're brave and want to try out Unicode support.
