currently maintaining four mirrors[0].

I could come up with any number of reasons to not have "real
work stuff" under /home on a server.
Not to mention certain software products, like e.g. Oracle.
Sure you can have its database under /home, but /u0? is a much
better place for it. For many reasons.
[0] FVO "maintaining" = checking FS usage every now and again;
the rest is done by cron, of course. Still, I'm "officially
responsible" for them...
