post the output of

  /usr/sbin/ntpdate -d -q 192.168.1.1

but while we're at it: i have a server running too, 24 days of uptime by
now, it's sync'd perfectly with some stratum 2 servers out there, i even
replaced that with some stratum 1's in a fury to get it working.
however, not once during the past 24 days have i been able to use it
locally...

here's the info i think you want:

  embryo:/etc# ntpdate -q ptbtime1.ptb.de
  server 192.53.103.103, stratum 1, offset -0.000329, delay 0.07181
  [...]: adjust time server 192.53.103.103 offset -0.000329 sec
                                                  ^^^^^^^^^
fair enough!

  embryo:/etc# echo rv | ntpq
  status=c011 sync_alarm, sync_unspec, 1 event, event_restart,
  version="ntpd 4.1.0 Sat Dec 15 09:33:44 UTC 2001 (2)", processor="i486",
  system="Linux2.4.12", leap=11, stratum=16, precision=-16,
  rootdelay=0.000, rootdispersion=3581.670, peer=0, refid=0.0.0.0,
  reftime=00000000.00000000  Thu, Feb  7 2036  7:28:16.000, poll=4,
  clock=bfef42b4.237de939  Wed, Jan 16 2002  1:07:16.138, state=1,
  offset=0.000, frequency=0.000, jitter=0.015, stability=0.000

stratum 16, always stratum 16...

and then, logically, from a host on the LAN:

  fishbowl:~> /usr/sbin/ntpdate -q -d ntp
  ntpdate[22860]: ntpdate 4.1.0 Sat Dec 15 09:33:47 UTC 2001 (2)

  ntpdate[22860]: no server suitable for synchronization found

i *do* have

restrict 192.168.14.0 mask 255.255.255.0 nomodify notrap notrust

in ntp.conf,

and yes, i am *totally* clueless.
