new kernel

hi guys

first i want to use a new kernel, for example 2.2.19 ok "new"...
or 2.4.x
and second i want to create another partition before the normal
partitition, now named sda1
because then i can easier boot because it is inside the first 100mbytes
of the disk.
what do i have to make in order to do this and not killing all my nice
installations?
can i use a 2.4.x kernel inside a debian gnu/linux 2.2 potato?
and which kernel you would reccomend for
riva tnt, isa soundblaster 16
ide-scsi emulation
...?
i am now running kde2
hope you can help me.
