not sure what you mean by panes ... though you can scroll through the
current message with up and down arrows, and switch messages by
hitting tab, for 'next new message', or just 'k' (up) or 'j' (down).
all of course keybindable as you like, e.g.:
~/.mutt/rc.keybindings
bind pager n next-entry
bind pager p previous-entry
(not sure if those are defaults)
