I also do high resolution film scans with linux.  If you want to just
tranform them a little bit, for example to scale, crop, rotate, adjust
levels, correct gamma, or change formats, it is *much* better to use
ImageMagick's command line tool 'convert'.  Convert is way faster for the
simple things and also easier to script than the Gimp (for batch work).

BTW if you haven't used it you owe yourself a look at vuescan, a payware
scanner program for Linux, Windows, and Mac.
