pon: command not found

I have my Alcatel USB ADSL modem working, (syncing with my ISP), and I have
edited the /etc/ppp/options, /etc/ppp/chap-secrets and /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
file.
pppd seems to need to run the ppp module??
