not likely.  Debian Stock Kernels are compiled with apm, you simply need
to activate it by passing "apm=on" to the kernel.

for lilo add to /etc/lilo.conf:

  append="apm=on"

for grub add it to the kernel stanza:

  kernel  /vmlinuz root=/dev/hda3 apm=on read-only
