check whether your BIOS has a "Windows 9x support" option or some
b*llsh*t like that -- and if so, try to disable it.

On my ASUS notebook, I initially got the same error, which was solved by
disabling said option.
This notebook has an *onboard* NIC (same RealTek chip), however, so YMMV...
