The previous poster was right. I had some recent troubles getting dhclient to work on a woody system with a custom kernel

Finally I looked in /var/log/daemon.log and saw:

Nov 6 07:27:43 debian dhclient-2.2.x: socket: Protocol not available - make sure CONFIG_PACKET and CONFIG_FILTER are defined in your kernel configuration!

After rebuilding the kernel with both of these options on, dhclient worked perfectly
