it certainly is not my first installation of linux. it is his first use of
linux. before i got my cable modem, i did use pon/poff. the same situation
applies with pon/poff. after i mistakenly sent the earlier message to you
instead of the list, i was by his place and did attempt pon/poff with the
same results. i then changed the permission pon/poff to root/dip and the
modem was able to connect as a regular user, with both pon/poff and with kppp
(with him added to the group).

teach some healthy habits of not working in root unless necessary, which it
shouldn't be for this.

Okay, I'll remove the user from dialout. The machine was set up at my house,
about a week ago, so log out is not a problem.
