I guess you've been onto the via-kernel driver list. That seems to be the
standard response on there. Odd for a development list.

I've heard, although I don't know if it's true, that some of the ac'97
codecs which are used with the Via chipset are locked to 48KHz only, and so
this is actually a limitation of the hardware. The driver needs to perform
sample rate conversion to play anything else.

I believe ALSA does it, and the kernel driver doesnt.

Fortunatley mine doesn't have this problem, so this is only hearsay.
