IMP/POP3 server conflict

hi,
i am using spop3d and courier-imap to provide mail retrieval services
on potato, with Maildir as the mail store. on top (IMAP), there is
IMP, and it all works beautifully - *except*: if a user reads an email
in IMP, which hasn't been downloaded, spop3d won't serve that email no
more, so s/he won't be able to retrieve it later when returning home
with a standard POP3 client. i can make that mail be downloadable by
manually making it unread (log into system, use mutt to mark it new),
but that's not feasible on a larger scale.

i need a solution that would either

(a) make IMP leave messages as read. to do this, it needs to speak the
right IMAP to courier-imap.

(b) a different POP3 server that's capable of Maildir, and which runs
in potato.

(c) another solution that doesn't require duplication of each user's
mailspools.

any clues?
