I am logged into M1 as "lance", not root

Yes, this is how it is setup and I reboot after changing.

I checked. UID on both machines is the same. So is GID

Would it matter if pub and data on S1 were owned by root?
Even if the group was 'share'?

so:
S1

/pub root share (777) rights
/pub/data root share (770)

user lance UID 100
group share GID 100

M1
/mnt root share (777)

user lance UID 100
group share GID 100

Lance
