At a guess I'd say it's a KDE problems, if it was an X problem you
wouldn't get the kdm login screen, Failsafe mode is nothing like 
safe mode in windows, what it does is start a X session and run 
a xterm, it still loads all the same drivers so it's not a nVidia
problem, I'd look at your KDE install
