	To close this thread...

I uninstalled xdm and installed wdm. It worked correctly right after 
installation. I'm now able to login as a non root user to X. The strange
thing is that the file's created by wdm look identical to the ones created
by xdm. If I have some time later on, I'll reinstall xdm and run some diffs
on the default config files in /etc/X11/xdm and see if there are any
differences. The simple joys of GNU/Linux.
