| the 2.4.10 kernel. I just deleted the file it mentioned and it works all right

If you don't use firewire, and aren't going to, then you have no need
for the module anyways.
I didn't have any problems upgrading just now. I have a custom 2.4.8
kernel though (2.4.10 wouldn't compile, haven't tried any newer ones
yet).
