Compiling openssh from source

I want to run a protocol v2 compatible version of ssh on a potato box. I've been told to just compile from source, although I have just added the later binaries and libraries to a system and had it work before. My question is where do I find a debianized openssh source package? It's not available in non-us testing, or unstable. Not much really was. So should I just build from a tar ball, or just install the binaries and required dependencies?

Thanks,
