Woody is a nickname for the testing release of Debian. It has newer
versions of softwares, but it is not as stable as Debian potato (stable
release).
Do you have an internet connection? If you do, then you can do the
upgrading via net. To upgrade from stable to testing, you should modify
your /etc/apt/sources.list. I have the following lines in it (modify them
to suit your needs);
deb ftp://ftp.fi.debian.org/debian testing main non-free contrib
deb-src ftp://ftp.fi.debian.org/debian testing main non-free contrib
deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US testing/non-US main contrib non-free
deb-src http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US testing/non-US main contrib non-\free
Then do;
apt-get update && apt-get -u dist-upgrade
But, I do not recommend upgrading to testing, if you are new to Linux.
Many things can get broken and fixing them will make your hair turn
grey. ;-) But, if you like to tweak and screw around the system, then
by all means - go on, and upgrade.
