seeing umlauts in xchat?

Hello!

despite my system is running fine in german, having even German chars on
the shell if needed, xchat seems ot have a big problem with them...

whenever a umlaut comes through a channel, the sign is interpreted
somehow and gives more or less unpredictable results....#

and myself am unable to type in umlauts on the xchat shell...

is there any solution?
