I don't know what is in the idepci kernels, but probably not much
(other than IDE and PCI support).  I recommend doing an 'apt-get
install kernel-image-2.2.19' to get the latest ("normal") kernel (from
the 2.2 series) and then adjust your bootloader to use it.  See if
that helps.
