during the installation, you will come to the stage of 
partitioning, use cfdisk to partition the disk. make a small 
boot partition, say 20 meg. at the minimum, you can make a 
root partition and a swap partition.
or if you want to make a /home and a /usr as well, go ahead.
divide your disk as you see fit, taking into account your
needs.

you haven't specified the size of the disk you are using
or whether this is a single or dual-boot machine - that would
have helped me to get more specific.

if you don't want to reinstall, try booting from your debian
bootdisks and running lilo after you have accessed your
debian system.
