If your mouse is a stock Microsoft mouse (like this one but with NO wheel : http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouse/intellimouse.asp) it won't work under X with GPM running. You'll have to set your XF86Config-4 to /dev/psaux as usual and use PS/2 type.
The wheel version of the mouse version will work with gpmdata but you'll have to set it to ImPS/2 to have it working.
