If you have the correct cables and another computer, you could use something like Tom's Root Boot disk (www.toms.net/rb/) to start a serial console and change the password that way. You won't even need to be concerned with the NIC driver. I don't know if Tom's RBD supports serial login by default but it should be very easy to add. LNX-BBC (www.lnx-bbc.org) supports serial login but you'd need to be able to burn a CD and it might be overkill for this purpose (though it's always handy to have around). I can send you a tom's disk image with serial login support if this is an option for you.
p.s. - This is just one example why it's a good idea to enable serial console support for any headless machine. :-)
