This is a known problem with Microchannel machines with Pentium chips,
you might want to check the Microchannel Linux page for further
information:  www.dgmicro.com/mca

Apparantly it can be avoided by building a kernel which does not do the
FPU test.  See the page for details.  Later version of the kernel have
the patch included, although I'm not sure which version is the
earliest.  I know at least 2.2.18 does.
