Did you use "nice" to make sure you get enough priority for CD-RW job?
$ su -c "nice --20 cdrecord -v -eject blank=fast speed=2 dev=0,0 disk.img"
I did not make much disks but had no problem with CPU load.
I am on P-MMX233 with IDE-CDRW :-)
