Are those fonts in a directory listed in /etc/X11/XftConfig?  If not,
add a line like

dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF"

The Xft search path is set in a different place from normal X, so it
would be quite possible that the fonts show up in non-AA.
