have you tried putting this into /etc/modules

soundcore
soundlow
sound
uart401
sb io=0x240 dma=0 irq=5 esstype=1888

This may well not be the proper way to do it, but it works for me. You may 
also have to monkey around with your irq and dma settings, as you might 
find that you get 8bit sound on irq=5 dma=0 and 16bit sound on irq=0 dma=3, 
I really don't know.  Try reading web pages with 'esstype' in them.
