Works for me in the console, not in X (gterm). But thanks to this list,
I can easily switch from X to console & back again:

Starting in X, Ctrl-Alt-Fn gives a console login prompt.
Starting the the console, Alt-<left|right arrow key> cycles through all
terminals, will take you back into X.
