That is strange. Try again.

# cd /etc
# cp exim.conf exim.conf.keep
# eximconfig
... do it again (select 2)
# diff -u exim.conf.keep exim.conf

New exim.conf file should have something like following:

smarthost:
  driver = domainlist
  transport = remote_smtp
  route_list = "* 192.168.1.1 bydns_a"
      
Here 192.168.1.1 is IP of smart host
