"Value too large for defined data type"?

I keep getting this message while trying to access a (presumably) verylarge file. It's a tarball restored from tape. I can't do anything morethan "ls". Even "ls -l" bombs with the message "Value too large fordefined data type".


What can I do about this?

I'm not actively monitoring the debian-user list right now, so please replyprivately (but cc: the list for archive purposes).
