for the record, Matrox G450 only works with XFree86-4.x (IIRC).
This version of X is included in testing, but unofficial deb's are
provided for potato, simply add these lines to /etc/apt/sources.lst:

   #### And now for XFree86 version 4 (unofficial!)
   deb http://people.debian.org/~cpbotha/ xf403_potato/i386/
   deb http://people.debian.org/~cpbotha/ xf403_potato/all/
