If you're absolutely sure all your network settings are correct I would
take a look at the hardware. Make sure link lights are working all the
way around. If you have a hub unplug it and plug it back in. If you
have never used the card before you should check the settings of the
card. I ran into this once with a 3c509 where it was set to use the BNC
connector instead of RJ-45. I'm not exactly sure how to check this
under linux. It was listed in dmesg on my OpenBSD box. You could also
check /sbin/ifconfig on the card or maybe /proc/pci. At any rate there is a
utility you can down-load off the 3com site. You can check the card with
that and change the settings. The name of the utility is 3c5x9cfg and
is on the second disk.
