/tmp trouble

I just wanted to experiment with partitions. So, created a 30 MB
 partition, and modified /etc/fstab as
   /dev/hda7 /tmp ext2 defaults 0 0

And rebooted. Now, mutt, lynx et al couldn't create tmp files, and won't
budge. What's wrong? I had to revert back, to put /tmp under / partition.
What's wrong with my setting? Help.
