i have the same problem, both with potato's gimp 1.0 and 1.2 from sid
compiled on potato.  i have yet to find out a solution.  and i have
installed gimp-print, made no difference.

this is how i do it:

let gimp print to a file, say /tmp/gimp.ps
lpr /tmp/gimp.ps

annoying but it works.
