/dev/mouse doesn't exist by default, it's a symlink to the actual mouse
device, very often /dev/psaux if you're using a PS/2 style mouse.

If you're using gpm, you'll want to use /dev/gpmdata instead.

Try both above or see list archives -- this problem's been discussed
frequently in the recent past.
