Actually this is a FAQ, but yes, you can install different OS on
different partitions or different harddisks. The install manuals should
give you some hints how to do it. Some MS Windows versions require a
defined chronological install order (they mess up the MBR and should be
installed first).

What kind of statistical software do you need?
I don´t know about statistical soft, but generally there is a bunch of
molecular biology soft available for Linux/Unix. Often the source code
is available and you can compile it for your machine. Some packages e.g.
clustalw, blast2, phylip are already included in Debian. I use my
computer for molecular phylogeny. It is stable like a rock, running
through for days constructing ML trees or doing bootstrap analyses under
different optimality criteria, while other stuff can still be done in
parallel.
