Used tape is not expensive.  8-12 GB units are available on eBay for <
US$100.  Tape is cheap and reusable.  CDR unit sizes are too small for
current storage capacities.

CDR is OK if you've got it, but I'd advise tape for backup if you're
starting from scratch.
