This is interesting.

    rowling:/home/dixon# ifdown eth0
    do_ypcall: clnt_call: RPC: Unable to send; errno = Network is unreachable
    do_ypcall: clnt_call: RPC: Unable to send; errno = Network is unreachable

When I was setting up NIS I must not have configured RPC correctly.  Thanks for your help.  I think I'm on the
right track now.
