I can't say whether this is an "official" way, but I have put my truetype fonts in /usr/local/share/fonts/truetype[1] -directory, run mkttfdir[2] in that directory and added the directory in X FontPath. For XF4, I't sufficient to add 'Load "freetype"' in the Module-section in XF86Config, but with 3.3.x -versions, you need to use a truetype-capable font server. I think that was all there was to it. At least it works for me... [1] not in /usr since that's for the package manager, right?
