RE: Getting to the GUI...
Manuel and David,
Thanks for the offer of help, the request files follow. Xlog.log is the
output of the startx command. Please note that I edited quite a bit of
XF86Cconfig to compact it. I did this as part of trying different things so
it would be easier to navigate. I manually delete all resolutions other
than 800x600 and 1024x768. Note that there are no "(--)" lines in xlog.log
this time, just the ending error that "no configured devices" were detected.
I assume that means screens and not video cards.
David made the comment about "ambitious" modelines. Given that I use
xfconfig86, how do you get them unambitious! Can I just pick any old hsync
and vsync values that are less than the ones in the modelines?
Unfortunately, I don't have the manual for the monitor, which is an
off-brand that my son brought home from college with him (Dad inherits the
junk! ;-)) I suppose that I could take the manual from one of the tubes
that I use at work (typically) NECS and use their values.
Anyway, thanks again to all. The comments about being RPM'ed into using
Debian and the reviews that I have read that talked up Debian in exactly
this area, make me want to be successful.
