One last note that hasn't been mentioned: you can choose the TT backend to use with XF4: freetype or xtt. This is done in the Module section, e.g.: 

Section "Module"
	...
#       Load    "freetype"
        Load    "xtt"
	...
EndSection

Of course, all this actually *is* in the documentation... ;)
