And I can > read the files! You have verified that your fstab does NOT have an entry like: /boot /dev/hda3 ext3 defaults 0 0 You have also verified that /dev/hda3 is NOT bootable, right? You have also verified that you reran lilo after editing lilo.conf? Are you installing the lilo boot record _on the master boot record_? The only way that your system would mount /dev/hda3 is if there's an entry in the /etc/fstab file.
