Disaster: apt-get upgrade broke X!

I've been tracking the upgrades in Woody for about 2 months using 
apt-get  without problems, but today it tried to upgrade X and 
it's broken it so that X won't work at all.

Question: how can I start again and reinstall everything from
potato?
