Re: Suggestions for dual processor

The first computer I ever got was a home assembled dual Pentium Pro machine.
At the time all I could afford was one processor, but a year or so later I
got a second. Ever since that time I've been completely hooked on SMP. The
second machine I got, and the one I currently use as my main machine is a
dual Celeron (Abit BP6) system. Personally I can tell a big difference
between single and multiple processor systems ... but I tend to run a bunch
of apps at once and compile a fair bit of the software I use.

Whether or not you go with SMP, however, the main thing is memory. It is so
cheap these days that I would try to get at least 256MB and if you can afford
it, go with 512MB. I would also reccomend that you not bother with processors
that use more than an 8x multiplier. While the processor(s) is faster, the
performance gains aren't that great as the processor(s) is mostly waiting for
data to crunch.

Oh yeah, and one more plug for SMP ... the 2.4.x kernels absolutely fly with
SMP. I ran the whole gamut of development kernels (2.3.x -> 2.4.0-testx)
because after using a 2.4.x kernel, going back to a 2.2.x kernel with an SMP
system is simply too painful.

The main drawbacks to SMP, in my mind, are the additional cost (which I
really don't think is much of a drawback because I think you get
significantly better performance ... but others would probably disagree), and
you're stuck with Intel (which you may or may not consider a drawback).

Just my 2c.

People don't change; they only become more so.
