on me too :(
It was also the reason for X not to run (at least with xtt,
freetype works but I would prefer xtt) and making me buy a new
graphics card (Ok. Having an old S3Virge-PCI card it was time
for this step anyway)

I don't think so. I can remember using Fonts like "Times New Roman"
or "Bookman Old Style".

Absolutly no Idea. However it does not seem to be a perl problem.
I think It is a Problem somewhere in the ttf libraries.

Does X with xtt work? the freetype module does not seem to need the
fonts.dir file.
